Big turnout at casting event
BARING all in the name of charity has struck a chord with dozens of would-be actresses in Sudbury, writes Anne Wise.
Auditions held for The Quay Theatre’s October run of the award-winning film and stage show Calendar Girls attracted 26 people on Sunday.
It is based on the true story of women from a Yorkshire Women’s Institute who strip off for a calendar to raise money for a local hospital.
Sudbury Dramatic Society, which is staging the show, is also producing a calendar to raise funds for St Nicholas Hospice Care, which supports people with terminal and life-shortening illnesses and their families.
Director Sue Clark said: “We had a super turnout for our auditions and what I am most sorry about is that we were not able to cast everyone.
“I was delighted at just how many people are willing to bare all in the name of charity – it’s wonderful so many came forward.”
She said that the 14 people chosen were a “star cast list” representing a range of ages, with women in their late 20s to their early 60s.
“I have worked with some before but some are new to me but not to The Quay stage,” she said, adding that 50 per cent of the proceeds from the calendar would be going to charity.
“Our calendar will be available for sale in Waitrose and Tesco, not only in Sudbury, but in Bury St Edmunds, and our first print run is for 8,000.
“We are looking for sponsors for many aspects of the show, including a business to sponsor the calendar and companies to sponsor pages.
“The Kodak studio in North Street in Sudbury has been fantastic in allowing us to use its studio at no charge for the calendar shoots.
“If anyone would like to help with this event, particularly with a view to sponsorship, I would be delighted to hear from them.”
She added: “This is Sudbury’s chance to get behind a fabulous cause and really make a difference.
“I am sure almost everyone who reads this will know someone who has been affected by cancer. Together, we can make a difference – please help support this fantastic show.”
