Beware, more Sudbury roadworks
ROADWORKS are set to take place over the next four months in Cornard Road as Sudbury’s new Sainsbury’s supermarket reaches the next stage of its construction, with the store’s steel frame already in place.
Temporary traffic lights are due to be put up at various points along the road to manage traffic while work begins on creating a junction outside the new 40,000 square foot store, opposite Stephen Walters & Sons.
The roadworks are due to be completed in early October and, in the meantime, the company says Cornard Road will be reduced to a single lane on alternate sides of the road, with footpath diversions also in place.
The store’s building frame is now visible from the open entrance of the construction site, the former William Armes factory, and this week the building’s cladding and windows are being fitted.
Sainsbury’s project manager Jim Woolcott said work on the inside of the store, which includes a customer cafe, will start by the middle of August in a bid to ensure it opens by the end of the year.
He said: “We are delighted with the progress on the site. We have had a positive relationship with the local community throughout the construction process so far and look forward to continuing to work with them closely.”
Sainsbury’s said it will create more than 300 new full and part-time jobs in the town when the store opens.
It has pledged nearly £500,000 towards town centre improvements including £100,000 for the bus station.
