Every effort will be made to retain a post office service in Great Cornard.

That is despite the impending closure of the Dairy Store Spar Shop in Broom Street, from which the facility currently operates.

A spokeswoman for the Post Office said it had no intention of moving the service out of the village and hoped an alternative site could be found, if necessary.

“Customers should be assured that we are committed to maintaining a post office service in Great Cornard and we will work hard to ensure this,” said the spokeswoman.

“Consequently, we will look to find a suitable alternative operator. This could be on the existing site or a relocation.”

Eleven staff are to lose their jobs when the shop shuts in May.

The business has been run by Sudbury-based family firm H Byham & Son Ltd for around 40 years.

“Sub-postmaster Henry Byham, at Great Cornard Post Office, has informed us of his decision to close,” the spokeswoman added.

“However, he will continue to run the post office from that premises for the foreseeable future.”

If the shop cannot be taken over, a public consultation would be held into a possible relocation of the service.
