Armed police search Halstead for gunman

A 29-YEAR-OLD man was arrested after an assault in Halstead sparked a search by armed police yesterday.

Officers were called to White Horse Avenue, off Mount Hill, shortly after 8am after reports of an attack involving an air rifle which left a bin man with minor injuries to his face.

The road was closed for several hours while armed police searched for the attacker. The victim - a Braintree District Council worker - was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford for treatment.

Searches were also carried out in Braintree and a property in Blenheim Close was surrounded before a man from the Braintree area was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, as well as drugs offences in Chapel Hill at 11.45am.

Wendy Schmitt, council cabinet member, said: “This is an unprecedented incident and we are relieved that our member of staff only received superficial injuries, although he was understandably shaken by the incident.

“He is now at home resting and our priority is to give him and his colleague who witnessed the incident our full support in any way we can. “Despite the nature of the incident both members of staff acted in an extremely calm and professional manner.”
