Alcohol-related illness killed woman found dead in guest house
A Hadleigh woman who never recovered from the loss of her first child was found dead in a guest house bedroom , an inquest heard on Tuesday.
An inquest in Bury St Edmunds heard Joanne Cain, 38, of Malyon Road, had a history of drinking heavily.
Ms Cain had been staying at Abbotts House in Newmarket Road, Bury St Edmunds, since being discharged from West Suffolk Hospital last September.
On October 26, her body was found on a bed by guest house owner Lisa Paske and Stephen Abbott, a friend who became worried when she did not answer her phone.
Suffolk Coroner Dr Peter Dean said statements indicated that Ms Cain had become increasingly withdrawn and recently only left her room in the evenings to buy brandy and cider.
Pc Sonia Plume, who examined the room, said an empty brandy bottle and cider cans were found but there were no suspicious circumstances.
In a statement, Mr Abbott said Ms Cain had told him that she would never commit suicide as she had three children.
Her former mother-in-law Linda Cain said Ms Cain had developed a problem with alcohol following the death of her first child in 2008 and from which she had never recovered.
Dr Dean described Ms Cain’s death as a “particularly tragic” case . He recorded a narrative verdict that death had been due to ketoacidosis, an alcohol-related illness which causes problems in creating glucose, a fatty liver and a head injury as shown by a post mortem examination, .
