300 people sign petition calling for return of postbox

Frustrated residents have launched a petition to get Royal Mail to return their much-missed postbox in Chaucer Road.

Sudbury town councillor John Sayers said the strength of feeling among householders he represents on the Chaucer Road estate had resulted in nearly 300 people signing it.

The postbox was taken away last year because the owner of the property on which it stood asked Royal Mail to remove it.

Residents have written individual letters to Royal Mail to complain, and one elderly householder has asked MP Tim Yeo to intervene.

Mr Sayers said the company has not been able to give a definite assurance the postbox will be replaced, saying a new one may require planning permission.

He said: “The petition is quite representative of the number of people who live on the estate.

“Many of them are older and they do not have access to email or computers and are more reliant on using the postal system.”

Mr Sayers said, ironically, he has to post the petition to Royal Mail’s complaints centre in Glasgow.
