A community bus service in Halstead is to be scrapped in the new year – potentially leaving hundreds of passengers stranded.

The Halstead Hoppa bus is being stopped on January 19 due to a lack of interest, putting an end to its nine hourly services.

The 44 bus was first launched in 2009 by Halstead-based Florida Coaches and was only taken over by current provider Turners of Essex in March.

Currently, the service, which charges adults £1 per ride, picks up at 23 stops in the town, collecting around 100 passengers each day.

Turners was not available to comment on the news but it is believed a lack of users is behind the decision.
