MARAUDING pirate ships – complete with skull and crossbone flags – were sailing along the River Stour over the bank holiday weekend.

Plastic parrots, peg legs and eye patches were donned by youngsters taking part in the River Stour Trust’s pirate trips from Sudbury on Monday.

The event, which began in 2009 courtesy of the bright idea of a volunteer, saw children aged 12 and under enjoy a free boat ride from The Granary in Quay Lane if dressed in pirate attire.

Catherine Burrows, from the trust, said she hoped the day had captured the imagination of families.

“It was good to see all the kids dressed up and, although it was probably quieter than in previous years, we still had a steady flow,” Mrs Burrows said.

“The event is all about encouraging young people to get on the river and all the pirates made a really good effort.”

Mrs Burrows said the day had helped raise £600 for the trust which would go towards improving river access points.
