Jury fail to reach verdict in trial of Rural Dean of Clare

The jury in the trial of a the Rural Dean of Clare have been discharged after today (November 17) failing to reach a verdict.

The Rev Ian Finn, 57, Rector of St Mary the Virgin in Haverhill, had been on trial accused of fraud by abuse of position.

The prosecution alleged that Finn, of Hopton Rise, Haverhill had failed to declare fees totalling more than £12,000 for funerals and marriage banns from a seven year period.

Today, after being told the jury were unable to reach a verdict, Judge David Goodin discharged them.

A further hearing is due to take place on November 24, when the Crown Prosecution Service will indicate whether they will be applying for a retrial.
