A SUDBURY tattooist with a love of reptiles is gaining nationwide recognition after he was featured in a magazine dedicated to the creatures.

Joe Hill, who runs Inky Joes Tattoos in King Street, can be found on the pages of next month’s issue of Practical Reptile – thanks to the 27-year-old’s life-like creations.

Since starting the business three years ago, Joe – a keen keeper and breeder of reptiles – has created tattoos of snakes, lizards and amphibians.

“The piece in the magazine has definitely helped trade and we have been getting people coming in from as far away as Oxford and Wales,” he said.

“I think it helps that I keep reptiles myself and have a passion for them. The business is flourishing and things have just spread by word of mouth.”

Joe, who is a self-taught skin artist and has kept 35 different species of reptiles and amphibians, including a carpet python, said his love for exotic animals began as an 11-year-old.

He has perfected his tattooing skills over a decade, and said it can take between five and eight hours to complete a tattoo.

“There aren’t that many people who can produce this type of artwork and you need a certain amount of dedication,” he said.

“I just want to keep getting better and making the reptiles more life-like.”
