Villages in north Essex are to benefit from money handed out by Essex County Council designed to help small community projects.

One of the big winners is Colne Engaine Football Club, which received a £17,700 grant towards a £95,500 project to build a new pavilion for the sports field in the village.

The council had deemed the current facilities as “unusable” for most sections of the community.

In Great Yeldham, the reading room will be refurbished. The facility is the village’s community hall and is used for a range of events.

It has been granted £10,000 towards a £20,242 scheme for refurbishments, including improving disabled access.

Gosfield, which last year lost its only village store, has been given a £5,500 contribution to set up a new community shop.

The Gosfield Foundation Community Interest Company hopes to raise a total of £45,000 to set up the new venture.
