TWO schoolgirls were given a massive pat on the back by a charity for their school fundraising efforts.

Maria Hedges, 16, and Zara Holt, 15, who are both Year 11 students at Sudbury Upper School, decided to embark on a quest to raise money for St Nicholas Hospice Care, which is based in Bury St Edmunds.

They were touched by the experience of a best friend’s mother, who has been ill and spent some time in the hospice.

After getting out their mixing bowls and whipping up some cakes to sell on behalf of the charity, they also organised a whole school non-uniform day.

The girls presented the total of their fundraising efforts – a fantastic £372.90 – to hospice community fundraiser Sue Long last week. Mrs Long praised their efforts in a school assembly.

The students said they had enjoyed baking and raising funds for the charity, which helps people with terminal and life-shortening illnesses, and their families.
