A Great Cornard man who battled cancer for 13 years before his death in January inspired his granddaughter to hold a charity fundraiser on Saturday.

Kate Boggis, from Mayflower Way in Sudbury, raised £402 for Cancer Research with a bouncy castle, raffle, facepainting and a traditional sports day at Woodhall Primary School after her grandad Desmond McDermott’s fight against the disease.

“The day went really well,” she said. “There were quite a few people despite the weather.

“My grandad had cancer for 13 years and it was only the last two that it got to him – he was a fighter.”
