ALTHOUGH the number of visitors was down on previous years, organisers of this year’s Lavenham Open Gardens say the event was a big success.

Hundreds of people walked around the 17 village gardens on show on Sunday and discovered a whole host of hidden gems, which were lush and green thanks to the recent rainfall.

Organiser Mike Hodges said: “We have a big diversity of gardens on show. Some of them are manicured to within an inch of their lives, while others are left to be more natural.

“People are always so surprised by how big some of the gardens are, and they always say how much they enjoyed seeing them. We have lots of hidden gardens which are a great delight.”

He said the number of people attending the event this year was down, due in part to the rain which was forecast.

“We also opened for a longer period of time from 11am to 5pm and this meant the event was more spread out than usual,” added Mr Hodges.

Money raised, which is usually around £3,000, will go to Lavenham Community Council for use in the village.
