Sible Hedingham firm fined for dumping

A COMPANY has been ordered to pay more than £1,500 after being caught illegally dumping waste.

QAD Networks Limited, of Rippers Court, Sible Hedingham, which sells cabling and fibre optics, was taken to court by Braintree District Council last Tuesday.

The firm was charged with acting contrary to the Environmental Protection Act by depositing company waste at the Braintree Civic Amenity site, on or before July 22 last year.

Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court fined the firm £1,000 and ordered bosses to pay costs of £626.25.

On the same day, Joe Davies, from Brewery Drive in Halstead, was ordered to pay more than £700 for a littering offence. Davies dropped a glass beer bottle – which smashed – in Freeport car park, Braintree, on July 16.

The incident was witnessed by a district council street warden, who served the 19-year-old with a £75 fixed penalty, but this was never paid.

The offence was proved in court in Davies’ absence and he was fined £200 for littering, £100 for providing a false address, and costs of £397.50 plus a £15 victim surcharge.

Wendy Schmitt, district council cabinet member for the environment, said she hoped the pay outs would make others think twice before dumping waste or littering.

“I congratulate the council’s environmental officers who continue to ensure that anyone whose actions ruin the clean and green appearance of our district, or the quality of life of residents, is brought to book and made to face the consequences of their actions in court,” she said.

“Let’s hope such cases act as a deterrent to anyone else tempted to act in the same irresponsible way.”
