An Edwardstone man died following a fall inside his village home, an inquest has concluded.

The body of Harold Smith, 77, was found at the foot of his stairs on October 28.

The inquest at Bury St Edmunds heard on Monday that police who broke into the house had been alerted by worried neighbours.

Curtains had not been opened by midday and a newspaper remained in the letterbox.

Assistant Suffolk Coroner Dr Daniel Sharpstone said Mr Smith was found to have suffered a head injury and had sustained serious blood loss.

A letter from his GP described Mr Smith as a “fiercely independent” man who had not asked for help and spent time caring for his brother who suffered from dementia.

A post mortem examination confirmed that death had been due to significant blood loss from a head laceration.

Assistant Coroner Dr Sharpstone recorded a conclusion that Mr Smith died as the consequence of a fall.
