A mathematical marathon ...
HARD AT WORK: Year 9 maths pupils at Great Cornard Upper School get stuck into some equations as part of the UK Maths Trust challenges.
YOUNG mathematicians flexed their brainpower as well as their leg muscles last week.
Year 9 pupils at Great Cornard Upper School took part in a series of challenges to select a team for the UK Maths Trust’s nationwide competition.
Activities included a “crossnumber” puzzle and a maths relay, in which pupils had to take it in turns to grab an equation, run back to their desk and solve it with their team.
Maths teacher Anna Graham said: “It is really challenging material for them – all the questions are on a par with or above the work they are normally asked to do.
“Things like this make maths a bit more fun as the children are able to run around and compete with each other.”
Team-mates Mary Halliday, from Sudbury, and Kirsten Newcombe, from Great Cornard, both 13, enjoyed the change of pace.
“It has been quite tricky, but when you figure out the question you feel good,” said Mary. “In normal lessons, you just write down the answers but this is a bit different.”
Kirsten added: “It’s fun, but quite hard as we aren’t very good at angles.”
