A CHURCH curate received an extra Christmas present after being announced as the winner of an art competition.

The Rev Val Gagen and her husband Philip, from Sudbury, were presented with a print of the winning painting in this year’s Visions of Sudbury competition – Sudbury Market Hill by artist Steven Binks.

The couple’s names were plucked out of a hat at Bookends in Gaol Lane, Sudbury, after correctly answering the question “When was Sudbury’s Corn Exchange built?”.

“It is amazing,” said Mrs Gagen. “We went into St Peter’s for the exhibition, spotted the picture and thought it was lovely, so to actually win it is great.”

Mrs Gagen is the curate of the North Hinckford benefice, which includes St Andrew’s Church in Bulmer, All Saints’ Church in Wickham St Paul and St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Foxearth.
