Supermarket staff praised as man is apprehended

A man was apprehended by staff after allegedly stealing a handbag from an elderly woman in a Sudbury supermarket.

Gareth Davies, 33, has been charged with theft from a person after it was alleged he snatched a handbag from a woman in her 90s who was shopping in Waitrose supermarket in Station Road.

The incident, which took place between 11am and midday on Tuesday, happened only three days after a bag was snatched from another elderly woman as she made her way to Market Hill.

Police are refusing to link the two incidents at this time.

Davies, from Raleigh Road, Sudbury, has been released on police bail to appear at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, April 22.

At a town council meeting on Tuesday, Pcso Jackie Barrett praised Waitrose staff for the way they dealt with the incident.

She said tackling handbag thefts was a priority and, along with Pcso Campbell, would be visiting local businesses to provide patrols when similar incidents are reported.

High-value thefts were of particular concern within Sudbury, with Pcso Campbell saying that criminals came into the town from as far as London.
