Your street needs you

POLICE are calling for Hadleigh residents to volunteer for a Streetwatch scheme in the town.

The idea, which has been running in Great Cornard for a year, involves residents patrolling their streets and working with police to combat anti-social behaviour and report issues.

A similar scheme has not taken off in Sudbury, with several attempts to recruit volunteers failing to garner the required support.

Babergh crime reduction officer Verity Line said: “I helped to set up the Great Cornard Streetwatch scheme back in April 2011 and have seen the benefits this has brought.

“I hope that residents in Hadleigh can get involved with a new scheme in their community.

“Volunteers patrolling the streets provide a friendly face in the neighbourhood, can report any issues or crimes to police and help people feel safer where they live.”

Volunteers walk the streets in pairs and with mobile phones and must be aged between 18 and 75 years old.

The scheme is regulated through operating guidance, codes of conduct and all members will undergo a local police check. Funding is provided by Suffolk Police through partnership funding.

Anyone interested in joining the Hadleigh Streetwatch scheme should call 101 or email verity.line@suffolk.pnn.police.uk.
