A Sudbury woman is calling for owners to be forced to keep their dogs on leads after her dog was attacked while out walking last week.

Matthew Clark was walking his five-year-old Staffordshire bull terrier Alfie, which he owns with partner Mary Carter, in Acton Lane near to Springlands Avenue, on Monday when another dog approached them.

“It came up to Alfie, sniffed him and just went straight for him,” said Miss Carter, from First Avenue.

“It took a big chunk out of his leg in a matter of seconds.”

She said the owners of the dog, believed to be a large black labrador or rottweiler, had let their dog off the leash and were a long distance away, further up Acton Lane.

“They must have heard it yapping, as they called it to them, it ran back and they just carried on walking,” said Miss Carter.

Alfie was left requiring a drain in one leg and had to be anaesthetised by vets. The bill for his treatment came to £511.
