SHATTERED glass fragments, DNA evidence and fingerprints were meticulously examined as forensic scientists tried to catch a burglar at a school on Monday.

No, this was not a pilot for CSI Sudbury, but 35 pupils at Sudbury Upper School learning about the science of catching criminals.

The workshop, run by John Bates, a forensic scientist with 25 years’ experience, gave pupils the chance to investigate a mock-up burglary in which a janitor had been attacked, including analysis of blood spatters, DNA and fibres, before role-playing a courtroom trial with the evidence.

Samantha Hill, head of science at Sudbury Upper, said: “They are learning what it takes to be a forensic scientist by applying the science they learn in lessons to real situations.”

Mr Bates added: “This links what they do in their science lessons to what goes on in the real world – fighting crime and catching criminals.”
