Spate of village burglaries causes residents concern

A string of burglaries in Long Melford has caused concern among residents worried about protecting their property from criminals.
The village has seen seven burglaries and four attempted burglaries in several locations, including Cordell Place, Old Court and Olivers Close, since the start of February.
Jewellery and watches have been taken from a number of properties, with tools and equipment also stolen from sheds and outbuildings.
Robin Hughes, who lives in Old Court and is Neighbourhood Watch coordinator for his road, said: “Of course people are concerned, although I am not terribly worried in the sense that nobody I immediately know has been targeted.
Mr Hughes, who has lived in Old Court for more than 30 years with his wife Eva, said:“I have circulated information to all the members of the watch as the police said there had been more than usual.”
George Fern, who lives in Cordell Place with his wife Madeleine, said: “It is worrying, but I don’t know what the police can do. It is a difficult job.”
Peter Turner, chairman of Long Melford Parish Council, said: “Certainly there has been an increase in burglaries in the village but, keeping it in perspective, it is throughout West Suffolk so we are not alone.”
He said police had held two advice surgeries recently, with events aimed at reducing crime to be held at The Co-op in Hall Street tomorrow between 11am and midday and on March 14 from 6pm to 7pm.
Mr Turner, who is on the parish council’s police liaison committee, said: “We don’t want to be complacent, but we don’t want to scare folk. Everybody needs to take sensible precautions and be vigilant. If you see something, pick up the phone and call the police.
“Everyone is being quite sensible. We have not had full-scale panic yet,” he said.
