Punched in the face in chicken takeaway
A Great Waldingfield woman punched and threw mayonnaise at a woman in a takeaway after she was pushed over in a nightclub.
Sharlene Chambers, 24, of Bantocks Road, admitted assaulting Rebecca Hender in February at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
The court heard that Chambers had been out drinking with her husband and friends in Easterns Station Lounge in Sudbury in the early hours of Saturday, February 24, before going to Chicken George takeaway in King Street at 2.50am.
Rosalind Cappleman, prosecuting, read Miss Hender’s witness statement which said: “I was sitting with friends at a table and, as we were eating our food, a woman who I didn’t know accused my friend of pushing her over.
“Nobody knew what she was on about. I laughed at her, which made her angry, and she became abusive and called me a dog and lots of other things.”
The court heard that Miss Hender swore at Chambers who reacted violently.
“She reached across and hit me on the left side of my face,” said Mrs Cappleman, reading Miss Hender’s statement.
“She went to hit me again and I grabbed her hand and she scratched my arm. She then scooped up some mayonnaise from a pot with her hand and threw it at me, getting it on my dress.”
The court heard that Miss Hender hit Chambers who retaliated with another punch to the face, before Chambers was ejected by takeaway staff.
Mrs Cappleman said she continued to be aggressive, banging on the window and coming back into the shop to punch Miss Hender on the back of the head before being taken outside and arrested.
“I was scared and shaking like a leaf,” stated Miss Hender in interview. She suffered a headache, scratch marks and bruising. “This was an unprovoked attack and all I did was try to defend myself.”
Mrs Cappleman said Chambers had previous convictions, having been fined and given a conditional discharge for resisting a police officer and assault from January 2011.
Chambers, who became tearful, said: “I had too much to drink. I don’t go out very often.
“I remember a lad pushed me over in Easterns and he got ejected for it. He was sitting with her (Hender) but that is all I remember apart from the police coming.”
A report by the probation service said Chambers, who works nights at Tesco in Sudbury at weekends and has two children, was ashamed of her behaviour and could see the link between her offending and alcohol.
The court heard that Chambers is due to start a college course with a view to becoming a primary school teacher.
Kate Tulk, deputy district judge, sentencing, said: “This was a sustained attack and you came back on several occasions to assault this woman.”
Chambers was ordered to complete a 12-month community order with supervision, a 10-day alcohol course and a five-day women’s emotional well-being course.
She was ordered to pay £85 costs, a £60 victim surcharge and £100 compensation to Miss Hender.
