Number of Sudbury TV licence cheats revealed

More than 180 people were caught using a television without a licence in Sudbury last year.

Figures released by TV Licensing show that the number was double those caught in Halstead, 40 more than Haverhill but less than one-sixth of the 1,100 people caught in Colchester.

Just over five per cent of homes evade paying the licence fee each year, which costs £145 for a colour set.

Victoria Sykes, TV Licensing spokeswoman, said: “Evasion remains at historically low levels of approximately five per cent, with the overwhelming majority of people ensuring they are correctly licensed. In order to be fair to the law-abiding majority who do pay for their licence, we’ll continue to pursue the small minority of people who do not pay.

“If people decide to watch TV without being properly licensed, they risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.”
