Man, 65, caught drink driving again
A 65-YEAR-OLD drink-driver from Hadleigh, who travels to Ipswich to care for his elderly parents, has been banned from driving for three years.
Brian Goodchild, of Angel Street, admitted driving his Peugeot 407 in Magdalen Road while over the legal drink-drive limit on August 17.
Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday that a member of the public had tipped off police that Goodchild had been drinking before getting into his car at around 9.50pm.
Rosalind Cappleman, prosecuting, said: “Officers indicated for him to stop and initially he did not. Eventually he pulled over in a bus stop.”
Goodchild told police that he had drunk three cans of lager earlier that day, and a roadside breath test showed he had 87 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – two-and-a-half times the legal drink-drive limit.
Kevin McCarthy, mitigating, said Goodchild, who works as a welder, had been to visit his 90-year-old mother in hospital earlier that day.
“That had upset him somewhat and he said he hadn’t realised he had drunk as much as he had done,” said Mr McCarthy.
Goodchild had a previous conviction for the same offence in 2009, for which he was disqualified from driving for two years.
“A disqualification will affect him, not only in terms of work, but also in looking after both his parents, who are in their 90s,” said Mr McCarthy.
Sentencing, presiding magistrate Philip Turner said: “We have no option but to ban you from driving for a period of three years.
“Should you be tempted to do so, and be caught, you will almost certainly go to prison, so don’t even be tempted.”
Goodchild was also fined £300 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
