Firestarter spared immediate jail term

A man who set fire to a curtain at the home he shared with his girlfriend has been handed a suspended prison sentence.

Luke Cole, 23, committed the offence on June 24 at a property on Chilton Airfield in Great Waldingfield.

Cole, of no fixed address, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to arson.

In mitigation, Stephen Dyble said his client, who at the time was unemployed, had tried to put out the blaze immediately.

The court heard that only minimal damage had been caused.

Judge David Goodin sentenced Cole to five months in jail suspended for 12 months. Cole will also remain under probation service supervision for the next 12 months.
