£290 bill for cigarette drop

A Sudbury smoker has been told to pay £290 after being spotted dropping a cigarette butt.

Anti-litter “police” witnessed Daniel Grimwood, of Hillside Road, throwing a cigarette to the floor as he walked in Annonay Walk in Chelmsford on March 31.

Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court heard that he and four other smokers were caught as part of a new get-tough policy targeting littler louts.

Prosecutor Alastair Lockhart told the court that it cost the county council £1million a year to keep the city streets clear of litter and that smokers were being targeted because cigarette butts leach toxins into the environment.

Grimwood, 23, who did not appear at court, was fined £150 and ordered to pay £140 in legal costs. Had he paid the fixed penalty issued to him after being caught, he would only have had to pay £50.
