101mph speeder, 47, fined £500 by court
A Little Henny man caught speeding at 101mph in a borrowed car has been left “clinging” to his driving licence.
Mark Connelly, 47, of Ryes Cottage, admitted the offence – committed in a blue BMW on May 23 – when he appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
The court heard that Connelly, who has a previous speeding conviction from 2011, was caught by police officers while driving at 101mph in a 70mph limit on the A14 at Higham.
Connelly said: “I was gob-smacked that I was doing that kind of speed. I can’t imagine not having a licence.”
He added that the car had been borrowed to take his daughter to university and he was not used to its power.
Connelly was given six penalty points, fined £500 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
“This leaves you clinging to the north face of the Eiger – it’s a scary thought,” said presiding magistrate Huw Davies.
