Councillors in Sudbury were left embarrassed at the sight of mounting rubbish on a retail park last week after it piled up over the Christmas break.

Sudbury town councillor Sue Ayres was with her grandchildren at Shawlands Retail Park on December 30, when she first saw the piles of uncleared rubbish.

“There appeared to be rubbish just lying around,” she said. “The girls are only six and eight but they said it was disgusting.”

Checking with shops in the park, she was told the area was usually kept clean.

Returning the next day with a litter picker and bin bags, Mrs Ayres was pleased to find a contractor had arrived to clear the mess.

Despite this, Mrs Ayres and fellow town councillors Adrian and Jan Osborne were left disgusted.

“It shouldn’t have to get into that state in the first place,” said Mrs Osborne.

A spokeswoman from Savills, the managing agent for the retail park, said: “The firm apologies to those working at the park and the public for any inconvenience caused due to a lapse in cleaning service that was caused by a contractor falling seriously ill.”
