When the Woodland Trust offered to donate 420 trees to Glemsford Parish Council, members could not believe their luck.
The only snag was that when the trees arrived, some were so small it was feared they would not survive the winter.
Step forward parish councillor Adrian Southgate, who is also a landscape gardener. He has been carefully nurturing the silver birch, oak and cherry tree saplings at his home in Fourth Avenue.
“I have around 30 trees which will go in the hedges around the allotments and playing fields at the end of February or early March,” he said.
