South Suffolk MP Tim Yeo is calling for a ballot to decide if he will stand as Conservative candidate at the general election.

Mr Yeo, who was de-selected by the executive body o'f his local party after a secret ballot, said: “I have consulted widely among local Conservatives. Many of them have expressed support for me and want to vote - I believe they should now have that chance.”

Under Conservative Party rules, Mr Yeo is entitled to challenge the de-selection by calling for a ballot of all local Conservative Association members. If he loses this vote he will be forced to stand down as an MP at the next election. Voting papers will be sent out on January 20.

He said:“I am delighted that more than six hundred party members are eligible to vote in this ballot. Whatever their decision, I will continue to work hard to secure a Conservative victory in South Suffolk, as I have done ever since I was first chosen as constituency candidate.”
