A football match in Long Melford raised £700 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Success After Stroke on Sunday.

Tony West, 22, from Chelsworth Avenue in Great Cornard, organised the game – which saw a Long Melford XI defeat a team of his friends 5-3 – after his dad Mick was diagnosed with terminal cancer in September. Mr West’s mum was left disabled following a stroke four years ago.

Around 70 people attended the game, held at Stoneylands ground, which is to become an annual event.

Mr West said: “Hopefully it will get better and better and continue to grow.”

He now plans to write and release a charity single.
