A TEAM of fundraisers collected £800 for a “very special” cause with their first event on Saturday.

Maureen Barsby, of Hall Street in Long Melford, and four of her friends organised a garden party in the village with proceeds going to St Nicholas Hospice Care, which supports people with terminal illnesses and their families.

The tea and cakes on sale attracted more than 50 visitors throughout the afternoon, as generous donations were made to the Bury St Edmunds-based hospice.

“The weather held, which was brilliant for us,” said Mrs Barsby.

“It was our first foray into fundraising so we will now think of other things we can do.

“I have had friends that have been cared for there and another member of the team’s husband was treated there – it is such a wonderful place and the work they do there is very special.”
