Canoe trip sees money flood in

OARS NOT WARS: Christian Aid held a sponsored canoe trip along eight miles of the Rievr Stour.

A SPONSORED canoe trip down the River Stour on Wednesday raised money to help people in the Middle East affected by war.

A group of 10 set off from The Quay Theatre in Sudbury at 10.30am and made their way along eight miles of river, arriving in Bures in the mid-afternoon.

The Rev John Boardman, minister at St John’s Methodist Church in York Road, Sudbury, who took part, said: “It was a delightful trip and it wasn’t really that strenuous.

“The hardest bit was doing something called portage – when you get to a weir, you have to lift the canoe out, carry it across the field and put it back in the river.”

The trip was organised by Christian Aid and the River Stour Boating Company to raise money for the charity’s work helping the people of Lebanon and the West Bank disabled by accidents and conflict.

Final figures for the amount raised are not yet known, but the total has received a welcome boost.

“In recognition of the fantastic work that Christian Aid does, the European Union has agreed to quadruple what we raised, so it will be quite a substantial amount by the time that happens,” said Mr Boardman.
