A butcher from Hadleigh has won a regional award for the quality of his meat – and is through to the finals of a national competition.

Andrew Belcher, owner of Andrew’s Quality Butchers, won the steak category of the eastern regional heats of the Butchers Q Guild Awards.

The organisation represents butchers and independent meat retailers in the UK.

Mr Belcher’s shop picked up accolades for it locally-reared beef, matured for 28 days, and also won gold awards for its pork sausages, beef burgers and Toulouse sausages at the regional heat.

Andrew said: “The steak is one of the biggest sellers in our shop. We’re delighted to win the regional award – it’s a very tough competition so we’re very pleased to have achieved such a high standard. We’re very much looking forward to the national competition.”

Almost 300 products from Q Guild butchers nationwide were entered in this year’s competition. The national final takes place in Coventry on May 31.

Mark Turnbull, national chairman of the Q Guild, said: “Entries have increased this year, such is the prestige of winning a Q Guild BBQ championship.”

Last year, Mr Belcher came top at the Smithfields Awards in London, where he proved a cut above the rest with the best pie.
