A convenience store is expected to open in Glemsford within six months.
A change of use application at Glemsford Motor Services in Bell Lane for two new retail units, including a Spar store, was approved by Babergh District Council a year ago.
Other business owners in the village objected to the application, claiming it would kill off independent traders.
A spokeswoman for Blakemore Retail, which owns Spar, said: “We are proceeding with the redevelopment of the Glemsford store.
“The exact program of work has yet to be agreed but the planned scheme is anticipated to be completed within the next six months.”
