Shop trial for teen booze sales charges

A Sudbury company and its owner will stand trial in October having been charged with selling alcohol to children.

Henry Byham, of Smeetham Hall Lane in Bulmer, appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Thursday charged with selling alcohol to a 16-year-old and a 15-year-old at Spar in Broom Street in December.

H Byham and Son, which is registered to Ballingdon Street in Sudbury and owns the Spar shop which is known locally as Dairy Stores, is also being prosecuted for the same charges as a separate defendant by Suffolk Trading Standards.

Byham and the company deny the charges and the trials will take place at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on October 21.

H Byham and Son also operates The Patisserie bakery in Long Melford.
