A family-run restaurant in Assington is in the running for a coveted title after being nominated from a list of thousands.
The Case Restaurant with Rooms in Further Street is among 25 finalists shortlisted for the AA’s Friendliest Bed and Breakfast Award 2013.
The establishment, which has seven bedrooms, has seen off competition from more than 2,600 bed and breakfasts that were visited by AA hotel inspectors.
Barry Kappes has run the business with his wife Linda for 27 years, and the couple are helped by son Antony, 30, and his girlfriend Kayla.
“It was a really nice surprise to be nominated,” said Mr Kappes, 64.
“It is a great morale boost to everyone who works here. To be whittled down from such a huge list is quite an achievement already.”
The couple took over the former pub in 1986 and, eight years ago, built guest accommodation to complement the restaurant.
Mr Kappes works in the kitchen, with his son, producing the food which has helped put their business on the map. Mrs Kappes is the front of house manager.
“Service is the most important thing and we treat everyone the same,” added Mr Kappes.
“It would be very special to win.”
The winner of the award will be announced during a lunch in London on May 28.
