One of Hadleigh’s oldest businesses has closed after 46 years in the town.

Electrical retailers BV Hicks has posted a notice in the shop window, saying: “We regret to announce that, after 46 years of trading in the town, this business has closed – we would like to thank all our customers for their support.”

Tony Addison, chairman of Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, said the closure was due to the shop not being able to run as a viable business any more.

“There is so much competition now from larger retailers and the internet,” he said.

“The other factor for local businesses is rates and rent – we need to get a rate review to bring it down to a sensible level.”

He added that the chamber was in talks with the council about the issue, but negotiations were still at an early stage.

But it is not all gloom, as he feels the high street was showing signs of picking up, with new businesses moving into some empty shop units.

l Sharon’s Bespoke Furnishing Shop in Market Place has also closed, due to illness. The business is for sale.
