A debate about business rates, which many blame for the closure of a number of shops in Sudbury, will be held later this month.
Shopkeepers and business leaders will be able to discuss the problem with South Suffolk MP Tim Yeo at a special meeting at Sudbury Town Hall on May 22.
Calls have been made for rates – assessed on a valuation of a shop’s annual rental value – to be made more manageable.
A petition set up by David Thompson, who runs three businesses in Gainsborough Street, including The Movie Shop, to lower the expense, has gathered hundreds of signatures.
Ian Berry, from the town’s Kestrel Bookshop, welcomed the meeting, which is open to all and starts at 6pm.
“I have spoken to lots of people who have waited a long time for this,” he said.
“The rates are a problem that need tackling – they have become unfair over the years.”
