Staff at the Co-op in Sudbury’s East Street have confirmed rumours that the store is to close, despite a contradictory statement from the company’s PR department.

Rumours over the store’s move to Highbury Barn in Great Cornard have been circulating for the last year.

Staff confirmed the move this week and said the store could be closed by the end of May, although an exact date has not yet been set.

When contacted, a spokesman from the Co-operative Food claimed the store would not be closing.

“We have a clear vision to become the UK’s number one convenience retailer and regularly review our trading estate like all major retailers,” he said.

“Over the coming years, our main focus will be to develop our existing convenience store estate.

“We have no plans in place to close this store at this time.”

Planning permission was granted in 2014 to convert the former Highbury Barn pub into a shop.
