When Chris Ward set up CW Courier Services, he was as nervous about his prospects as anyone launching a new business.
He read that more than 80 per cent of businesses fail in the first three years. Having reached that milestone, he wants to encourage other small businesses.
“After leaving my job as a bricklayer to go travelling in Australia for seven months, I came home wanting a change of direction, something different to what I had been doing for the last six years,” said Chris, from Sible Hedingham.
“I wanted to do something I would enjoy. I knew I wanted to work for myself and I love driving, so I put the two together and CW Courier Services was born.”
“I decided to set up a same and next day courier service offering a bespoke service to local businesses and the general public.
“It took a lot of hard work. Market research was essential before doing anything. I had to make sure there was a need for what I wanted to offer.”
He started out with a small van and pitched to several businesses. Now he has done 1,000 jobs and travelled 170,000 miles.
“I came close to throwing in the towel more than once, but with the support and help from people around me I carried on and am so glad I did,” added Chris.
