A butcher’s in Hadleigh can claim to serve up the best pie in the country after coming out on top at a national awards ceremony in London.
Taking part in the prestigious Smithfield Awards, Andrew’s Quality Butchers in the High Street won a diamond award for its steak, mushroom and Adnams ale pie, judged the best hot eating pie in the contest.
Run by husband and wife team Andrew and Claire Belcher, the pair were also given gold awards for their beef pasty, Suffolk bacon and mushroom quiche, pork pie and Suffolk ham and onion quiche.
Mrs Belcher said: “It was amazing to win gold and to win the overall pie award is incredible. We’re really pleased.
“We’d originally made a steak pie and wanted to give a bit more choice, so we developed the steak and ale pie.
“In Suffolk, we’ve got Adnams and we wanted to use their ale. They kindly recommended their Broadside ale, which works really well.”
The couple, who have run the business for 20 years, were presented with their award by TV food critic Matthew Fort.
Mr Belcher said the secret to their long-standing success was using the very best cuts of prime beef.
