A LONG Melford knitting shop has been nominated for a prestigious award – just seven weeks after opening.

Crandon Crafts, which was opened in April in a cabin behind Cherry Lane garden centre in High Street, is among five nominees from across the country to be shortlisted for Best Independent Yarn Store in Let’s Knit magazine’s annual awards.

Owner Lianne Gerrish said: “It is awesome. I thought it was a wind-up when they phoned.

“I don’t know who put the shop forward or how many people did as it is all anonymous, but it’s nice to think that I’ve made such a positive impression.”

Mrs Gerrish, who lives in Great Cornard with her husband John and has three children, Charlotte, Thomas and Bethany, took the plunge and opened the shop having previously worked in nursing and computer shops.

“I have always made things – all my family have – and this is something I have always wanted to do,” said Mrs Gerrish, who plans to expand into workshops and knitting groups.

Voting for the awards can be done through the magazine or online and opens on July 14 for two months.

The winners will be announced later in the year.
