Sudbury shop’s future in the balance
THE future ownership of a Sudbury clothes store is in the balance after its parent company announced it is looking for a new buyer for the business.
Bonmarché, in North Street, is part of the clothing retailer Peacocks which, in turn, has announced it is trying to find a new investor for its business and has filed a notice of its intention to appoint an administrator.
The firm bought Bonmarché 10 years ago and owns nearly 400 stores nationwide, but a company spokeswoman said that specific stores affected were not being named.
Staff at the Sudbury store were referring calls about Bonmarché’s impending sale to the company’s head office, with the store manager refusing to elaborate on the story.
In a statement, Bonmarché said: “The board of The Peacock Group and its advisers has been reviewing the future of its Bonmarché business for some time.
“Following this careful and thorough review, the board believes Bonmarché will be better positioned under different ownership and is in advanced discussions with a potential purchaser.
“In order to provide protection for the business while this sale process completes, the board has today filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator.
“Existing management will remain in place as an administrator has not been appointed.”
