Start date unknown for Sudbury Sainsbury’s

THE timescale for the start of construction on Sudbury’s new Sainsbury’s store has not yet been decided, a spokesman for the company said this week.

The new Cornard Road store will be built on the site of the former William Armes factory.

It was given the go-ahead by Babergh District Council at the end of November, having previously been deferred following objections over highways issues.

The development will include a 300-space car park, customer cafe and cycle park. The supermarket says that around 300 jobs, made up of both full and part-time positions, will be created.

Sainsbury’s has also donated around £400,000 to the town for various improvements.

Commenting on the store completion, a company spokesman said: “We have no fixed timescale yet.

“We have got various things that need to be done from our planning application, and need to be finalised. We will be making an announcement when we have details of the timeframe.”

He said that the time it would take to build the store could not be estimated.

“There is no such thing as an average time on an average store,” he said. “All the stores are different according to the construction materials.”
