Morrisons’ alcohol bid

ALCOHOL sales at Morrisons in Hadleigh will be discussed by Babergh District Council later this month.

The supermarket has applied for a licence to allow it to sell alcohol between 6am and midnight, seven days a week, when the store opens early next year.

The council’s licensing sub-committee will meet on September 17 to decide whether to grant the application.

James Buckingham, the council’s corporate manager for environmental protection, has objected to the application, due to concerns over increased traffic to and from the site, as well as noise from customers and delivery vehicles.

Mr Buckingham’s written representation recommends limiting the sale of alcohol to between 7am and 11pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 10.30pm on Sundays, “so as to prevent public nuisance from noise”.

His letter states that he has also written to Morrisons to try to reach an agreement, but has yet to receive a reply.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “We have submitted an application for an alcohol licence at our new Hadleigh store and would not wish to comment further at this stage.”
