‘Hike won’t hit business’
AN increase in long-stay car parking charges in Sudbury and Hadleigh will have little effect on trade, according to a town business leader.
The cost of parking in the towns’ district council-run car parks for periods of more than three hours increased from £1.50 to £2 on Monday.
John McMillan, chairman of Sudbury Chamber of Commerce, said: “It won’t affect businesses too much as it is the short-stay car parks which bring the shoppers in.”
He added that employees of Sudbury firms would be hit by the additional cost as they use the car parks for work.
Commenting on the Free Press’ Facebook page, Lee Parker wrote: “Sudbury workers now have to pay £40 per month to come to work. I wonder how much Babergh staff have to pay in Hadleigh? Oh, to work in the public sector.”
Sudbury Town Council, the chamber of commerce and other organisations are currently in talks with Babergh District Council to take over the running of the car parks.
Mr McMillan said it was too early in discussions to say whether this would have any impact on long-stay parking charges.
