Factory site made secure

AN empty factory in Glemsford has been secured by its owners to prevent people from entering and hurting themselves.

Concerns had been raised by parish councillors over the former E W Downs site in Brook Street, which has been unused since 2006.

Councillor Anne Mallalieu said: “There were concerns that, as a former industrial site, people were able to gain access to the building, which contains some quite dangerous elements, such as bits of metal and things that would not be good if children got in.”

A police spokeswoman said there had been no reports or complaints of anti-social behaviour in the area, other than evidence of littering on the site.

“We liaised with the parish council and contacted the owners to inform them of the problems,” she said.

Plans for a shop, business units and 21 homes on the site were submitted in August 2010 but subsequently dismissed on appeal.
